Hosting
Lessonstick is hosted by Vercel Inc., 440 N Barranca Ave #4133, Covina, CA 91723, USA (vercel.com).
Accounts and their data are hosted by Supabase Pte. Ltd., 65 Chulia Street #38-02/03, OCBC Centre, Singapore 049513 (supabase.com), on servers located in the European Union.
Intellectual property
Lessonstick’s text, design, illustrations and code are the property of Jules Charles, unless otherwise stated. The sample lessons and app screenshots are demo content.
The Poppins and Caveat fonts are distributed under the SIL Open Font License.
Preply, italki, Zoom and Google Meet are trademarks of their respective owners. Lessonstick isn’t affiliated with any of these platforms: it helps you review your lessons, wherever you take them.
Personal data
Your lessons and progress are saved to your account, hosted in the European Union. No one but you can access them from the app.
To create your account and sign you in, we use your email address: it’s used to send you your sign-in code and, if you ask for them, reminders before your lessons. Nothing else: no newsletter without your consent.
Saved to your account: your first name, your languages, your level in each, your time zone (for your reminders and weekly lessons), your teacher’s name, your lessons, your next lesson or your recurring lesson (every Tuesday at 6:00 PM, for example), and your progress (words reviewed, answers per day, today’s mission). A copy stays in your browser, so the app is fast and works offline.
When you accept the terms of use, we keep the date and the version you accepted.
Each time you use AI, we keep the date, the type of request and its size (number of tokens), to enforce the usage limit and keep track of its cost. The content of your notes isn’t kept.
If you turn on reminders, we keep for that device the notification address your browser provides, its time zone and the interface language. They are used only to send you a reminder the day before and 2 hours before your lesson, and another one after the lesson to file your notes, through your device’s notification service (Apple, Google or Mozilla): the reminder reaches it encrypted, and it can’t read it. They are deleted when you turn reminders off, sign out on that device, or delete your account.
If you ask for email reminders, we write to your account’s address the day before your lesson, through our email delivery provider. Every email has a link to unsubscribe in one tap.
When you send feedback from the app, we keep it with your account, along with the page you were on, the interface language and your browser, so we can reply and fix what’s wrong.
To improve the service, we count a few actions, linked to your account: lessons added, missions finished, app opens. We collect these statistics ourselves, with no tracker or third-party tool, and they contain nothing from your lessons.
If the app runs into an error, a technical report is sent to our server: the error message, the page and the browser. It doesn’t contain your lessons.
This data is kept for as long as your account exists. You can delete your account at any time from your profile (“Delete my account”): your account and all its data are then permanently erased.
While you answer out loud, your browser’s speech recognition writes your answer as you speak: to do this, Chrome sends your voice to Google’s servers, and Safari may send it to Apple’s. We never receive your voice: the recording you play back stays in your browser and disappears when you move on. If you ask for your answer to be corrected, only its text is sent to our server, then to Anthropic (see “Artificial intelligence”).
As with any website, our hosting providers may keep technical logs (IP address, date, page requested) to keep the service secure and running properly.
Under the GDPR, you can ask to access, correct, export or delete your personal data by writing to julees.charles@gmail.com. You can also file a complaint with the CNIL, the French data protection authority (cnil.fr).
Sharing with your teacher
You can link your account to your teacher’s, by inviting them or accepting their invitation. You’re the one who agrees to share, and you can stop sharing at any time from your profile: your teacher then no longer sees anything.
Your teacher only sees what relates to the language they teach you: your first name, your level, your lessons in that language, your review history, your mission and your daily activity. They don’t see your email, the notes you take in Lesson mode, your AI usage or your lessons in other languages. They can’t change anything.
Teachers have a free account: we keep their email (to sign in), their first name and the languages they teach. Their students see their first name, never their email. Deleting a teacher account also removes its links with students; the students keep their lessons.
Before you sign in, an invitation link only shows the first name of the person inviting you and the language involved.
Artificial intelligence
Three features use AI: organizing a lesson from your notes, prepping a lesson from your level and the planned topics, and correcting your spoken answer when you ask for it.
When you use them, what you send goes through our server and is then passed on to Anthropic (Anthropic PBC, USA), which provides the Claude model:
- your notes and notebook photos, or your level and the lesson topics;
- for spoken answers, the question and the text of your answer, transcribed by your browser (never the audio recording);
- the language you’re learning;
- to avoid duplicates, the language points and words already saved in your lessons.
AI is only available to signed-in accounts, with a limited number of uses per day.
Our server doesn’t keep your notes, photos or answers: it passes the request along and sends the response back to your browser. Anthropic processes this data in the United States to produce the response, under its own terms and privacy policy.
Don’t send sensitive information unrelated to your lesson, such as an ID document or health data.
Cookies and storage
Lessonstick uses no advertising cookies, no trackers and no third-party audience measurement tools.
To work, the site stores a few things in your browser: a session cookie to keep you signed in, a cookie that remembers the site’s language (English or French), a copy of your lessons and progress, your acceptance of the terms of use, and the language you’re learning, picked on the home page. These are essential to the service, so they don’t require your consent.
